Composition for 8 Fluorescent Lights

Finn Borath received a grant for the development of new work, in collaboration with Boris de Klerk. The project focuses on the fluorescent tube light: designed to be inconspicuous and neutral, it only draws attention when something goes wrong—when it starts popping, sputtering, or ticking. This contrast forms the basis of the installation Composition for 8 Fluorescent Lights by Finn and Boris. With their installation, they transform empty, neutral spaces such as a car garage, the white cube, or a classroom into a lively and compelling artwork, without adding any extra objects.

Since 2019, Finn and Boris have been creating performances and installations together with a strong interdisciplinary approach. Since spring 2023, they have been working on a series of performances they call Chamber Pieces, the first of which was Black Box: First Movement. In this work, they composed a musical piece using only the technical equipment usually found in a theatre: smoke machines, moving heads, and fluorescent lights are the sole sound sources for the composition. In 2025, they will continue this trajectory with a continuous installation for spaces where fluorescent lighting is naturally present.
