Tussen de Regels
Myrte van der Molen received a grant for the development of new work. In Tussen de Regels, Myrte returns as a performer in her own video work. This research focuses on the interplay between image and language, with specific attention to eye contact and automatic speech. How does repetition and slowing down of everyday conversation affect communication? And how does the dynamic of eye contact shift within video? Through a cyclical process of performing, filming, reviewing, and editing, she explores how her working method and visual language evolve. This experiment forms the foundation for a larger project and a deepening of her artistic practice.
Myrte investigates social behaviour and identity. While she recognises the value of social rules, she also perceives a sense of restriction and an inauthentic way of communicating. By staging social situations in her work, she creates future scenarios that question the conventions of social conduct. The body language, text, and props used in her practice rely on familiar associations. By creating new combinations, deconstructing language, and altering behavioural codes, she develops projects that interrogate the social realm. As a result, her practice — which began with performance and video — continues to expand into new disciplines.
