Development grant
Simone Albers received a grant to develop new work. For this project, Albers lives and works for three months in the Spinnerei in Leipzig. In exchange with scientists and (amateur) researchers affiliated with the natural history museum in Leipzig, she wants to delve into paleontology and geology, to learn about both the collection and the diversity of ecosystems and organisms that the earth system has known. In addition to this substantive research, she will experiment with new techniques, seeking hybrid forms between painting and sculpture with a focus on recycling materials.
Simone creates paintings and installations that reflect on the natural world and how we (in the West) relate to it. Natural sciences, such as paleontology, astronomy and microbiology, play an important role in her research. The second main area in her work is philosophy. Interweaving insights from the natural sciences with philosophical reflections, she proposes alternative representations of nature through her work, showing the complexity of natural systems free from objectification and reductionism in an attempt to undermine human exceptionalism.
