A Network Flicker

Martijn van Boven

Martijn van Boven received a grant to develop new work. A Network Flicker reveals hidden network structures through the flicker effect in film. The network consists of users who each generate frames and thereby assume different roles. Together they produce a short film, sometimes 20 seconds, sometimes a minute, or endlessly evolving as the network expands. Its distribution takes place through the same network. The resulting films evoke stroboscopic effects, abstract geometric afterimages and visual echoes. This dynamic logbook remains in motion: each network and each screening produces a unique cinematic experience.

Martijn’s work operates within the field of abstract film and computer art. He combines the possibilities of contemporary computer technology to generate abstract imagery and (ambient) sound environments. His practice includes live cinema performances, video installations and collaborations with composers. Through a conceptual approach, he explores themes such as digital aesthetics, perception and rhythm, using computer and imaging technologies both as medium and as subject.
