Paradise Pt. II
Experience experimental and documentary film in a solo exhibition by filmmakers Mirka Duijn and Nina Spiering. The exhibition presents major new productions that emerge from a shared interest in questions of desire, power and the act of looking at images.
Mirka and Nina focus on landscape imaginaries as they appear in personal and botanical gardens, including a garden in Gothenburg where a large part of their new video installation We Looked and Called It Nature was filmed. By closely examining these cultivated environments, the works reflect on how ideas of “nature” are constructed, aestheticised and sustained.
Alongside the new installation, the exhibition also includes the landscape mirror installation It’s alive, ALIVE! and the video essay film Paradise Pt. II, the production of which was supported by Amarte. Together, the works bring together the artists’ ongoing research into landscape, ecology and the politics of imagination.
Mirka is a Dutch filmmaker based in Gothenburg and forms an artistic duo with Nina. In their joint practice, they explore how image traditions shape our perception of and relationship to nature. Their work moves between documentary and fiction film, installation and writing, and engages with archives, visual culture and ecological questions.
Recent projects include Shangri-La, Paradise Under Construction (2022), a film that examines the creation of “paradise” through images and power structures. Their work has been presented internationally at festivals, museums and cultural institutions such as Eye Filmmuseum, IDFA and the International Film Festival Rotterdam, and has received several awards, including a Digital Emmy (2015) and a Peabody Award (2019).
