Diepdruk

Maurik Stomps
25 Mar - 5 Apr 2026

In Diepdruk, Maurik Stomps explores the tension between control and surrender in the creative process. During a residency in Norway, he submerged six perfectly formed metal cubes to a depth of 500 meters, where the extreme pressure of the ocean irreversibly deformed their shape. These sculptural works, serving as tangible traces of invisible forces, reflect Maurik’s introspective search for meaning within his own family history, particularly the death of a brother he never knew, and the subtle marks this left on everyday life.

The cubes are presented as part of the exhibition Don’t forget to check in during Rotterdam Art Week. Alongside the sculptures, Maurik shows a first draft of the film he created during the process, bringing together nature, technology, and imagination. The public gains insight into both the physical experiment and the artistic reflection on vulnerability, transformation, and the limits of matter.

About Maurik Stomps
Maurik is a designer and artist whose practice moves between object, space, and narrative. After studying Graphic Design at the Willem de Kooning Academy, he deepened his narrative approach during the Contextual Design master’s program at Design Academy Eindhoven. His work treats objects not as static end results, but as tools of inquiry that reveal hidden stories and themes from daily life, from family history to the unpredictable forces of nature.
