Maurik Stomps
20 - 21 Sep 2025
start time 11:00
end time 17:00

During his recent residency in Norway aboard the research vessel Atlas, Maurik Stomps lowered six metal cubes to a depth of 500 metres below sea level. Exposed to the immense pressure of the ocean, the objects were irreversibly deformed. These sculptural works serve as tangible witnesses to forces beyond human control, raising questions about vulnerability, transformation, and the limits of matter. During the Groot Rotterdams Atelierweekend, Stomps will present the cubes alongside a first draft version of the film he created during the voyage. The presentation offers audiences an insight into both the physical experiment and the artistic process in which nature, technology, and imagination converge.

About Maurik Stomps
Maurik Stomps is a Rotterdam-based designer who uses objects as a means to investigate and reinterpret the world. After studying Graphic Design at the Willem de Kooning Academy, his practice shifted from prints and posters to the creation of art objects, stage designs, and interiors. To deepen his approach, he pursued a Master’s in Contextual Design at the Design Academy Eindhoven, where he combined his narrative background with a hands-on working method. Today, his work regards objects not only as final outcomes but as research tools that bring to light stories and themes embedded in everyday life.
