Het rood in blauw veranderen

Julia de Dreu

Julia de Dreu received a grant for writing Het rood in blauw veranderen, an essayistic diary about the artistry of four women — Agnes Martin, Anne Truitt, Natascha Sadr Haghighian, and Saloua Raouda Choucair — and Julia’s own search for a free space in which to create art. She writes about what these artists mean to her, what she recognizes in their work, and why it matters to her. At the heart of the diary lies the question: What does solitude mean for the artist? Where does the need for invisibility come from? Is it a survival mechanism, or can it be seen as a form of resistance?

Julia writes in various forms about (visual) art. In 2022, she participated in the Slow Writing Lab of the Dutch Foundation for Literature. Her texts were nominated for Hooray for the Essay (2023) and the Jan Hanlo Essay Prize (2025) and have been published in De Standaard der Letteren, Trouw, and De Revisor, among others. Het rood in blauw veranderen will be her debut, for which she received the C.C.S. Crone Stipend in 2025, in addition to support from Amarte.
