Algorithm of Colour

Lawil Karama received a grant for the development of new work. Algorithm of Colour uses ERA5 climate reanalysis data and atmospheric scattering physics to model the sky over Mbale, Uganda, on 10 February 1973. The resulting color, produced as a modeled rendering rather than a documentary record, will be presented as a large-format print, video, and dome projection installation at W139 Amsterdam from September 2026.

Lawil is an Amsterdam-based interdisciplinary artist whose practice centres on diasporic experience, marginalised histories, and the politics of memory. Working across installation, computation, and material research, Lawil develops work that locates historical presence in physical and atmospheric data.
