Sophie Mastenbroek

Sophie Mastenbroek received a grant to develop new work. For this project, Sophie dives into the world of paper and fibers. She makes paper from lint from the dryer. Up close, she sees a tangle of colors in the gray mass. She wants to explore how she can give her material different properties in the paper-making process. Ultimately, she wants to apply the results in new work because she sees that the material she works with has many possibilities.

Sophie translates her ideas into drawings, glass, and wood in a process where forms continuously assume new surfaces. As ideas continuously change material, they reveal something fleeting and uncertain about their materiality. With pencil on paper, she creates a constellation of lines, shapes, and textures in which clouds, dust, and paper continuously change form. The figures she draws land on paper and take on a flat form as a temporary appearance. In her work, she explores different manifestations of her subjects because she is fascinated by how all matter is always in a state of change.
