Me, a depiction

Lisa Schamlé

Lisa Schamlé received a contribution to develop the performance Me, a depiction. In the project, she asks the question, "Why is one body in society written off as repulsive and the other as attractive?" Sexual attractiveness, as we know it, is often considered to be primal and pre-cultural, and all too easily seen as natural. When in fact it is heavily influenced by social context. Self-esteem and social status are often determined by how "attractive" someone is in a sexual sense. In the work Me, a depiction, Lisa searches for a way to liberate herself sexually.

Lisa Schamlé is an Amsterdam-based visual artist, theater maker/performer and former member of the performance collective La Isla Bonita. In her work, she combines humor with aesthetics in her work, which is often theatrical in nature. She approaches her work as an obsessive collector, with an urge to draw parallels between seemingly unrelated things. By placing them in a series, Lisa gives new meaning to her subjects and questions the given context. She plays with clichés and redefines outdated concepts and gender-affirming roles. By sharing this, she seeks to present a more nuanced picture that others can identify with; for connection and comfort.
