XAKALELE

Marvin Lalihatu

Marvin Lalihatu received a grant for the development of new music. XAKALELE brings together electronic club music, performance and personal storytelling. Working with hardware, voice, rhythm and texture, XAKALELE explores how hardness and vulnerability can exist side by side. The project is a search for a distinct musical language that is instinctive, physical, emotional and not bound to one genre or identity.

Marvin is a Moluccan-Dutch artist and composer from Rotterdam. Combining sound, handmade synthesizers, technology, new media art and sculpture, Marvin’s work explores modes of storytelling beyond the limits of language. Their practice is shaped by their experience as a biracial polyamorous neuro-queer in Rotterdam, being torn between a multitude of (sub)cultures, and the questions, emotions and confusion that arise from their unique position therein.
