Met Borduurwerk Verbinden: Verhalen van Koerdische Vrouwen

Handan Tufan received a grant to develop new work. Met Borduurwerk Verbinden: Verhalen van Koerdische Vrouwen explores how portraits and personal narratives of Kurdish women in the Netherlands merge into an interdisciplinary image, blending photography, embroidery, and oral history. The project translates these stories into embroidered portraits, making lost connections between women, generations, and regions visible once more. The work illuminates identity, autonomy, and the principle of Jin Jiyan Azadî (political Kurdish slogan, symbolizing resistance against oppression and the fight for women's rights) in a poetic and experimental manner.

Handan is an artist and storyteller specializing in photography and embroidery. She combines visual portraits with textiles to reveal personal and collective memories. Her practice focuses on identity, memory, and connection, with particular attention to the overlooked stories of women from the Kurdish diaspora. Previous works by Handan have been exhibited at De Balie and various other venues.
