Command, Control
Georgiana Barcan received a grant for the development of new work. Command, Control is an audio-visual installation that investigates how software shapes reality by researching the abrupt emergence of data centres in Romania, against the backdrop of the country’s notorious hacking culture. Mixing video and game engine simulation, the work employs storytelling and character development to ask how does software see the world?
Georgiana is a Romanian-born artist working across moving image, installation and text. Political, ecological, cosmological, and technological themes come to the surface through the experiences of beings familiar to the peripheries, at the edge of the world. She thinks of her moving-image practice as a cinema of invisibility, where she captures unseen yet hyper-present forces such as the internet, software, memory or changes that unfold over long periods of time and that have become so obvious that their after-effects are almost untraceable. Her moving-image work has been screened internationally in film festivals and galleries such as IFFR, Go Short, Mostra Internazionale del Cinema di Genova, Bucharest International Experimental Film Festival, Eye Museum, W139, V2_, Tent, The Grey Space in the Middle, Contemporar, and many others.
