Gunpowder Tea

Jonas Smulders

Jonas Smulders received a grant to develop a new film in collaboration with Daniël de Vries. Gunpowder Tea is an experimental short film centred on the heroin epidemic that swept through Amsterdam in the 1970s and ’80s. As heroin floods the city centre, the communities it touches gradually descend into a hopeless state of loss of control and destruction.

Jonas is a filmmaker and actor. He created his first short film Tex, which premiered at the Warsaw International Film Festival and went on to have a successful festival run. In 2023, his second short film Obesk premiered in the international competition of the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, marking the beginning of a fruitful collaboration with co-writer Daniël. Daniël previously directed the short films 121 km/u and Wit Goud. Since the release of Obesk, Jonas and Daniël have been developing their next project: Gunpowder Tea.
