Zelfredzaamheid
Jan Adriaans received a grant to develop a short, visual film. Zelfredzaamheid centres on a class of refugees with residence permits who, in preparation for their final integration interview with the municipality, rehearse through role-playing exercises. All participants are enrolled in the Z-route, an integration programme for those unlikely to achieve the B1 language level within three years. The participants take on all roles themselves—doctor and patient, customer and shopkeeper, employee and employer—helping one another find the right (Dutch) words.
What is expected of the newcomer? Are they ready to fully participate in society without support? And what are the consequences of their Dutch language proficiency for their future in the Netherlands?
Jan is a visual artist whose work explores how groups and movements come together and attempt to sustain themselves. Can we recognise ourselves in the idea of community and interdependence? Jan produces short films and video installations, writes, and works with photography and sound. His works are speculative yet rooted in real-life events, often based on personal stories. He enjoys collaborating with fellow artists and people from other disciplines.
