Guus van Geffen

Guus van Geffen received a grant to artistically translate several works he has created in his career in theatre. In over 45 years of theatre-making, Guus has witnessed countless unique, iconic, and powerful theatrical moments, characters, emotions, and scenes. For many years, he has felt the desire to grant some of these scenic moments an autonomous, ‘frozen’ existence. Without reconstructing or repeating them, they could take on new life in the form of an installation, diorama, box, ‘theatrical altar,’ or statie—in essence, a peep box. What drives Guus is the emotional impact and evocative power these fragments hold or awaken. It is the convergence of disciplines in a theatrical space (or box) that enables him to share their potential and insights with an audience in a more visual and contemplative form.

Guus has worked in the theatre for over 45 years. Within this field, there is no discipline he has not explored or practised. Yet his greatest passion lies in visual work and the creation of light and video imagery. Countless spaces and locations have been designed or adapted by his hand to authentically house the characters and themes of the stories being told.
