Memento
Urša Prek received a grant for the development of new work. Memento combines the history of brutalist monuments with the symbolism of snow globes as souvenirs. Collective history is something that lingers and buries itself into several generations. This project looks at specific historical narrative and puts its socialist ideology under question with the hints of irony and humor. Creating a souvenir to my own history filled with symbols of socialism and objects of belief systems, makes for an interesting ambivalence: it has passed, and this is all I have left from it: a snow globe on my junk-shelf. And on the other hand, it is an ideology we still decide to keep mementos of artefacts.
Urša is an interdisciplinary artist based in Eindhoven. Her work, ranging from visual to sound installations, explores the territories of memory and history. She is driven by a personal curiosity about what makes us who we are, especially in terms of relative experience: inherited histories, trivial memories, and their connection to space. From audio, video and sculpture, her work falls some place in between.
