From Code to Glass

Octave Rimbert-Rivière received a grant for the development of new work. From Code to Glass explores how algorithmic systems and traditional craftsmanship can shape one another, using glass as a medium where digital intention meets material resistance. By generating forms through procedural modelling and translating them into cast glass, the development examines what happens when coded logic is confronted with the slow, tactile knowledge of craft. Glass, historically tied to fragility, permanence, and mastery, becomes a site to question how contemporary tools transform our understanding of making. This development trajectory proposes a sustainable, small-scale approach to creation that values care, time, and embodied skill, offering an alternative to industrial acceleration while reimagining craft for the digital age.

Octave is a visual artist who explores the dialogue between digital technologies and traditional craft methods. By bridging algorithmic systems with ancient techniques, he interrogates how humans adapt themselves to the logic of machines, and how, conversely, machines can be bent toward human gestures, imperfections, and improvisations. He aims to create sculptures that not only materialize this tension but also invite reflection on our relationship to production, consumption, and craftsmanship.
