Boekpresentatie: Dubbelleven

Maite Karssenberg
11 Jun 2026
start time 20:00
end time 22:00

On June 11, Dubbelleven will be presented: the biography of the radical thinker Geertruida Kapteyn-Muysken (1855–1920), written by Maite Karssenberg. The book is the result of a years-long quest that began when Karssenberg, as a student, discovered Kapteyn-Muysken’s diaries.

The evening will focus on Kapteyn-Muysken’s life: her time in the Netherlands, London, and Zurich; her radical ideas; and her commitment to freedom, equality, and solidarity. Attention will be given to the themes that emerged during the first feminist wave, such as marriage, motherhood, sexuality, and the double standard. Additionally, the role of (women’s) clubs and friendships of that era will be explored, as well as how Kapteyn-Muysken resisted the rise of conservative forces, war, and nationalism.

The program includes conversations, poetry, and performances, with contributions from, among others, Christien Brinkgreve, Lotte Houwink ten Cate, Iduna Paalman, and Rodante van der Waal.
