Dedalo, uit zee opgestaan is the intense history of the short life of the Dalmatian fishing boy Dedalo Piscioneri, born on Easter Sunday of the year 1547. Sixteenth century. The Ottoman Empire is at the height of its power. Dedalo, risen from the sea is the intense history of the short life of the Dalmatian fishing boy Dedalo Piscioneri, born on Easter Sunday of the year 1547. Dedalo is not alone: an array of real-life, diverse characters gives this narrative its enormous scope. Throughout the adventure, the question of how early modern man related to eternity arises, and his receptivity to signals that became drowned out in later centuries is highlighted. With visible pleasure and fabulous detail, Richard Hemker melds vastly different worlds into a multifaceted story that moves from Italy, through the Balkans to Constantinople. And Dedalo, risen from the sea turns out to be more than the lore. Hemker paints in crystal-clear colors the facets of a world that seems to have disappeared, but thanks to his idiosyncratic storytelling talent, sparklingly revives.
