Unusual Fairytales
The musical roots of Joanne Bird lie in Valkenswaard, but her development as a singer-songwriter took shape during her travels through the United States. On this special evening at Theater De Hofnar, these worlds come together: her local roots meet her American inspiration. Together with her American band and musician friends from Valkenswaard, Joanne Bird brings her own musical universe to life. Story-driven songs in the spirit of indie and Americana folk, subtly enriched with jazz influences, form the core of the programme. In addition, she will perform songs from her latest EP Unusual Fairytales.
About Joanne Bird
Joanne Bird is a Dutch singer-songwriter who creates indie and Americana folk music, enriched with subtle elements of jazz. With songs about everyday experiences and vulnerabilities, arranged with great care, she takes her audience on a personal and musical journey.
Joanne began playing piano at the age of five, later adding vocals and guitar. She studied at the Fontys Academy of the Arts in Tilburg (Bachelor) and the Conservatory of Amsterdam (Master of Music), and also participated in several study programmes in New York City. Over the years she has received vocal coaching from Lucy Woodward, Jim Mola, Machan Taylor, Sofie Dirkx and Marle Thomson, among others.
After releasing her debut EP Sounds of the City in 2023, Joanne embarked on a five-month journey through the major music cities of the United States. There she found inspiration to write, record and perform new work. During this time she collaborated with renowned musicians from Nashville, New York and New Jersey, with whom she has since performed both in the Netherlands and the US, and with whom she recorded her second and third EP in Asbury Park (New Jersey). Since her summer tour through the US in 2024, Joanne has been officially endorsed by C.F. Martin & Company (Martin Guitar).
