Na Caminhu Pa Acácia
On 4 December, the exhibition Another Island by Janilda Bartolomeu opens at Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam. At the heart of this exhibition is Na Caminhu Pa Acácia, a film installation supported by Amarte, in which Janilda offers a personal and poetic portrayal of the imagination of the Cape Verdean diaspora in Rotterdam and Dakar.
About Another Island
Wherever the Cape Verdean diaspora settles, another island emerges—one that belongs to the archipelago. Just as Rotterdam is referred to as “the eleventh island” because of its large Cape Verdean community, Dakar in Senegal could equally be described as another island. The exhibition centres on the dreams and imaginations that connect the twelve islands. Another Island immerses you in the collective visions for the future held by the community.
The exhibition is part of the long-term research project Another Island: As We Surrender to the Tides. Janilda is developing this project during her residency at RAW Material Company in Dakar, as part of the programme Archipelagoes of Bond.
