The Third Twist
The solo exhibition The Third Twist presents three recent works by Anna Moreno, in which she reflects on temporality through utopian architecture and the potential of speculative imagination. The works are part of a trilogy developed by the artist, based on three projects by Ricardo Bofill and three short stories by James Graham Ballard.
The central work of the exhibition is The Terminal Beach, a film co-directed by Anna with Brazilian filmmaker Bernardo Zanotta. Conceived as a road movie, the film documents the current state of a nomadic settlement built in 1979 by Ricardo Bofill in the Algerian Sahara, commissioned by then-president Houari Boumédienne. The project belongs to the utopian phase of Bofill’s practice, during which his studio (Ricardo Bofill Taller d’Arquitectura) operated as an interdisciplinary collective of architects, poets, painters, and other creators. Intended as a modern complex, the site ultimately remained unfinished and today reveals the tension between the ideals of that era and the realities of modern colonial legacies.
The trilogy was realised with the support of Amarte Fonds, Mondriaan Fonds, Stroom Den Haag, VEGAP, Hangar, and Ricardo Bofill Taller d’Arquitectura.
Anna is a visual artist working between Barcelona and The Hague. Her practice explores how fiction, cinematic montage, and speculative thinking can reactivate architectural histories and the collective imagination. Through films, installations, and collaborative processes, she reflects on how societies construct and project their futures. Anna has been an artist-in-residence at institutions worldwide, including the Jan Van Eyck Academie (Maastricht), SASG (Seoul), HIAP (Helsinki), Salzamt (Linz), and Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto (Biella). Her work has been presented at MOCAB (Belgrade), SAS Geumcheon (Seoul), the Fundació Joan Miró, and 1646. In addition, she is a lecturer and publishes essays on art, politics, and architecture in specialised journals such as CARTHA.
