Questionable choices, absurd housing, and a defence no one will see coming. At the Keizersgrachtkerk, the church transforms into a courtroom: a place of reflection and faith becomes the stage for a trial in which themes of housing, survival, and absurdity take centre stage. Home Sweet Home turns one woman’s absurd housing journey into a courtroom filled with humour and recognition. The performance offers a sharp yet moving perspective on Amsterdam’s housing crisis, showing that sometimes the only way to confront injustice is through laughter.

Başak Layic, born and raised in Istanbul, is a storyteller and theatre-maker whose work weaves philosophical questions with real-life experiences and a distinct sense of musicality. Her work has been presented at various festivals and venues across the Netherlands, including Oerol, Storytelling Festival, Frascati, and Amsterdam Fringe. Her stories move between the personal and the political, the poetic and the satirical. She creates worlds where sorrow exists alongside humour, music merges with storytelling, and the fourth wall is always on the verge of collapsing.
